The Elgin Writers Group has teamed up with Keith Community Radio (KCR) to tell their stories over the airwaves in a year long series entitled Moray Voices.

On the second Monday of each month, listeners tuning in to KCR will hear a story written and told by a member of the Elgin Writers.

The project is the brainchild of Elgin Writer Steve Storey who recently had ten of his own stories broadcast on KCR in a dedicated series titled, The Parlour Tales.

Steve said: "It was in the summer of 2022 that I first had the idea of following the completion of The Parlour Tales with examples promoting the very best of the Elgin Writers Group from across differing genres.

"The thinking was that such an exercise would provide a stimulating outlet for the Group’s writing; educate members in the production and promotion of their work; and encourage enthused broadcast listeners to consider joining our group. "

Lynne Russell, President of Elgin Writers Group said: “Elgin Writers are delighted to see this collaboration with KCR come to fruition. The stories are from both our experienced and new members and the talent that we have in Moray.

"They cover a number of genres, some funny, some poignant but all entertaining. Grateful thanks to KCR for allowing us the opportunity to share our stories. Our committee is working on the new programme for 2023 - keep an eye on our Facebook page or website - new members are always welcome.”

The first story, titled The Story of the Young Man Who Had Five Things in His Pocket/The Father Who Wept will be broadcast over Monday January 9 at 7.45pm and repeated on Tuesday morning at 11.45.

The story was written by Elizabeth Copp, who was inspired by her own family history to pen the tale of someone who finds an unexpected and interesting figure in their family tree.

She said: "My family thought we'd achieved notoriety, when we discovered a pirate in the family who was supposedly hanged in India in the 19th century.

"Alas, this claim to dubious fame turned out to be short-lived, for Robert died in a hospital bed and not on the gallows. His was still a good story, however, so I picked up my pen and started to write."

Elizabeth is originally from Orkney but now lives in Keith and only recently joined the Elgin Writers Group, she hopes to one day write a memoir about her father's interesting family for her children.

KCR chairman, James Wiseman added: "Keith Community Radio is delighted to be working with Elgin Writers Group. Listeners will enjoy hearing these short stories, written by local people. There’s something for everyone on KCR."

All of the stories will be available on KCR’s website: www.kcr.fm and on KCR.fm at 107.7FM.
