One of the last remaining vestiges of the former railway station in Turriff will now see a new lease of life at the hands of a pair of local community group.

The depot building and yard at Station Road in Turriff was formerly used by the Council’s Landscape Services as a small storage depot with welfare facilities for staff.

In March a valid Asset Transfer Request for the property was received by Aberdeenshire Council from Turriff Town Pride/Turriff in Bloom Group, seeking a 15-year lease of the former depot building and yard site.

This was considered and moved for approval by the Formartine Asset Transfer Group, which is a multi-disciplinary group of council officers chaired by the area manager.

On Tuesday, members of the Formartine Area Committee backed the plan.

Councillor Anne Stirling commented: "I am very supportive of the transfer, there are a wide number of benefits to the groups involved and the wider community."

Fellow councillor Alistair Forsyth added: "These are experienced groups with a good track record on delivering and making a difference to Turriff and I thank officers for helping this progress."

Members of the committee also approved an application for funding from Friends of the Den towards initial progress on bringing CCTV coverage to the Haughs.
