On Track for Spring is the latest temporary exhibition to be welcomed to the Garioch Heritage Centre.
Taking its inspiration from the building’s industrial heritage the exhibition has as its centrepiece the late Ian Baxter Moncur’s Old Meldrum to Inverurie Model Railway along with train themed activities to amuse the younger visitors.
Although a Dundonian by birth, Ian spent much of his life in the Garioch and when it came to planning his model railway it was an easy decision to base it around the now defunct line that used to run between Inverurie and Old Meldrum.
He was passionate about recreating the line and spent many hours taking photographs and carrying out research to design and create the most accurate model he could.
Following his death in 2021, his family kindly donated the model to the Garioch Heritage Centre.
His family said: “We know that Ian would be so pleased surprised and extremely proud to have his railway on display at the Garioch Heritage Centre”
Joan Bruce, a committee member of the Garioch Heritage Society worked with a team of volunteers to create the exhibition and said: “We are thrilled to have the model.
"It forms an integral part of our exhibition and we are sure that our visitors will enjoy and marvel at the work that has gone into the creation of this intricate piece of engineering and design”
The exhibition will run through to Sunday, April 24, 10 am – 4 pm (closed on Mondays). There is a small entry fee.
The Centre is currently open from Thursday – Sunday 10am – 4pm with free Admission but donations are greatly appreciated.
