MORAY Council has set up a new fund to help local groups get food supplies to the most vulnerable during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The communities food fund is part of a £70 million package of measures being introduced by the Scottish Government to address food security issues.

The council has been allocated £448,000 to deliver a structured set-up to support households who may struggle to access food. This includes provision for people having to shield due to being at highest clinical risk and, as such, are unable to leave their homes.

The funding will be available to community and third sector organisations responding to food insecurity.

Initial funding of up to £5,000 is available for groups within each associated school group area (ASG). Collaborative funding bids between organisations are being encouraged.

The council says applications for funding must clearly describe the target group and the needs that these groups of people are experiencing as a result of the COVID-19 crisis. Applicants should also demonstrate how the proposed support complements other food-related support within their local community.

Applications for the funding are being managed by the council’s community resilience team. Groups are asked to contact the following local team leads to discuss proposals and to develop a whole community response to food insecurity.
