Champions start season on a high
THE opening night of the Wick and District Pool League saw last season’s division two champions, Seaforth Club, face the division one holders Camps "2".
Ryan Carter got the match under way against former team-mate Gary Macalpine.
Macalpine nearly completed an excellent clearance until he missed a black into the middle pocket. Carter then took full advantage by clearing the table to put Camps "2" 1-0 ahead.
This seemed to spur on the Camps and they raced into a 6-0 lead with notable performances from Bruce Honeyman and Andy Mcwatt.
The Seaforth Club then got a frame on the board as Macalpine recorded a total clearance with an exceptional shot on the black.
Camps "2" ran out 9-2 winners in a match where all frames were extremely close.
Two evenly matched teams – Blackstairs "1" and FSC "1" – faced each other in what was sure to be a close match. Blackstairs "1" showed they are contenders with an 8-3 win.
Bayview "1" also recorded an 8-3 win as they cruised past Camps "1". George Smith and Liam More left their opponents with seven balls but it wasn’t enough to keep their Camps side from losing the match.
Newly promoted Queen’s got off to a great start in division one when they beat Commercial 6-5. Lee Kerr had a fine match, winning all his games for the Commercial, but it didn’t stop the Queen’s lads from running out victors.
Sinclair Bay are looking to get back up to the top flight after being relegated last season. They got their second-division campaign off to a flyer by defeating Mountain Dew "1" 10-1.
Sasa’s and Mountain Dew "2" both held their nerves to run out 6-5 winners over FSC "2" and Crown "2" respectively.
Results – Division one: Camps "2" 9, Seaforth Club 2; Blackstairs "1" 8, FSC "1" 3; Bayview "1" 8, Camps "1" 3; Queen’s 6, Commercial 5; Crown "1" v Blackstairs "2", postponed. Division two: Sinclair Bay 10, Mountain Dew "1" 1; Mountain Dew "2" 6, Crown "2" 5; FSC "2" 5, Sasa’s 6; Free week, Bayview "2".
