A ROSS-shire group with an international reputation for being at the forefront of traditional arts education has begun a new term of classes.

Fèis Rois offers people of all ages the opportunity to experience traditional music and Gaelic culture.

Classes are open to adults and young people (from Primary 4 upwards) across a variety of instruments including accordion, fiddle, guitar, harp, mandolin, tin whistle and group music making.

For young people from P4 to P6, there are 30 classes on offer every week in Ullapool, Alness, Evanton and Fortrose. There are classes for adult learners in Ullapool, Dingwall and Fortrose, including the ever-popular weekly jam session at Tulloch Castle on Wednesday evenings.

As well as taking part in classes, there are regular opportunities to perform for family, friends and the wider community throughout the year.

The 2018-19 programme includes a number of new after-school music classes in drumming, accordion and tin whistle based at Obsdale Primary School in Alness. Working closely with head teacher, Susan Josey, the group is widening access to participation in music classes through offering a number of subsidised places that are available for families on low incomes.

Classes are open to everyone from complete beginners through to advanced players, and the organisation can provide musical instruments for those wishing to enrol through its affordable instrument hire scheme.

A spokeswoman said: "You don’t need to be able to read music or have any previous knowledge of traditional music to enjoy the weekly classes. Complete beginners’ classes are available for both young people, and adults – you are never too old to learn."
