A VIDEO of a rare celestial phenomenon has been captured in Caithness by photographer Maciej Winiarczyk.
He was trying to get a glimpse of noctilucent clouds – made of sunlight-reflecting ice crystals which are normally too faint to be seen from the ground.
Forty-one-year-old Maciej captured them but also managed to get images of the aurora or Northern Lights flitting across the night sky. It is very rare to see both simultaneously.
He was delighted with his success and described it as “ a really, really special moment.”
Aurora is a natural light display in high-latitude regions and is caused by the collision of charged particles with atoms in the atmosphere.
