Golspie book place in cup final

By SPP Reporter

GOLSPIE Sutherland booked their place in the Jock MacKay Memorial Cup final with a 4-2 victory over Invergordon at the Recreation Grounds last Saturday.

After losing in a penalty shoot-out the week before, Golspie were in no mood to let another cup final opportunity pass them by and they made an impressive start to the tie.

Sean Henstridge deservedly gave Golspie the lead in the 15th minute when he netted at the back post. It was all Golspie and Scott MacAngus doubled the advantage five minutes later when he got on the end of a Tommy Campbell cross to net with looping header

An own-goal from Martyn MacAllister added to Golspie’s lead just before the break. The Invergordon defender challenged Henstridge to a high ball but only succeeded in steering his header into the net.

Golspie looked out of sight in the 50th minute when MacAngus netted his second of the tie when with a bullet header. But another own-goal on the hour mark gave the home side hope of a revival when John Smith turned the ball past Golspie goalkeeper Gordon MacRae.

Bob MacAskill then scored with a stunning half-volley from outside the 18-yard box

But Golspie were in no mood for another cup shock and they closed ranks to secure a place in the final.

Golspie complete their league programme on Saturday 9th March when they travel to play Muir of Ord Rovers at Pavilion Park.

A victory would go a long way in cementing second place in the table.

Shaun Kerr is free from suspension but Jordan Sutherland misses out after accumulating too many penalty points. Shane Sutherland is also a doubt due to work commitments.

Rovers welcome back Kevin Lewis and Brian MacDonald, but John Skinner faces a late fitness test.
