LOVE letters dating back almost 80 years have been found in a box in the Caledonian Canal.

The box, which also contained wedding invitations, was handed in to Inverness police in December last year after it was discovered floating in the water at Dochgarroch.

The lost and found department at Burnett Road police station has failed to trace or identify the owners.

The letters were sent to an address in Inverness.

Letters are addressed to Miss S. R. Paterson, "Bidston", Ross Avenue, Inverness, postmarked Edinburgh, 19th August, 1934.

"There are a number of love letters and wedding invitations of great sentimental value inside the box and surprisingly, they are very well preserved for having been in the water," said a Northern Constabulary spokeswoman.

Anyone who can help reunite the property with its owner should contact Inverness police on: 01463 228413, or if you wish to remain anonymous contact Crimestoppers on: 0800 555 111.
