Newtonmore make it a cup and league double
Newtonmore made it a Premiership and Camanachd Cup double on Saturday, gaining revenge on Kyles Athletic with a 3-0 victory in a final watched by almost 4,000 spectators.
The Blue and Whites went into the 106th final at An Aird in Fort William keen to erase the memories of their Macaulay Cup defeat at the hands of Kyles just a few weeks beforehand.
Perhaps the biggest smile of the afternoon was that of Newtonmore captain Jamie Robinson, who scored his only goal of the season.
He had been controversially send off in the Macaulau Cup final so lifting the Albert Smith Medal for his man of the match performance was extra special.
Afterwards a delighted Newtonmore boss P.J. MacKintosh said he always believed his players could net the ‘big one’.
"We knew we were capable. It was just a matter of getting over the finish line," he said.
"I think we were in command. I don’t think Michael Ritchie had a save to make in the first half. In the second half, Kyles came back at us but I thought we were worth it.
Jamie Robinson got the Eilan side on its ways after he teed up a shot from 25 yards. Somehow, the ball managed to avoid every blue jersey and find a way past Kyles keeper Kenny MacDonald, who saw it late through a sea of bodies.
Despite efforts from Fraser and Glen MacKintosh, the scoreline remained 1-0 at half-time and Kyles were seeking answers.
Newtonmore made it 2-0 when Glen MacKintosh carved right through the heart of the Kyles defence before screwing the ball beyond MacDonald and into the net.
The prolific Danny MacRae struck a trademark goal with five minutes left, the trophy was Badenoch bound.
