THE Highland Council is pleased with the response from the public to its participation in a national Twitter 24 initiative.

It saw the authority send tweets to its 1167 followers over a 24-hour period from noon on Tuesday.

During the Twitterthon, it gave a flavour of a day in the life of the council by tweeting 120 messages under the hashtag #whatwedo.

Ninety followers were gained in the week leading up to the event (30 on the day) and no adverse reaction was experienced.

Budget leader Councillor David Alston said: "We’ve been using Twitter and other social media successfully for a while now but we keep experimenting. The feedback that we get from many users shows that they welcome this form of communication and appreciate us trying to innovate. We will certainly consider repeating Twitter 24 and extending social networking."
