A FULL-SCALE emergency operation was launched in Inverness on Thursday evening after a man was reported acting strangely on the Friar’s Bridge over the River Ness.

At around 5.25pm police received several calls from members of the public expressing concerns about the man’s behaviour on the bridge.

There were fears that he may have jumped into the river, and a search and rescue operation was mounted.

A full search of the area was carried out by officers from Northern Constabulary, HM Coastguard, Kessock Lifeboat and RAF Search and Rescue Helicopter 137.

Following these enquiries and searches it was established that the man initially been seen on the bridge had left the area safely on foot, and all agencies were subsequently stood down.

This matter was later established as being a false alarm with good intent and Northern Constabulary would like to thank the public for their assistance in this matter.
