A DEALER who sold drugs in the Highlands for a decade was jailed today (Monday) for six years.

Michael Cameron (33), from Fort William, was found guilty at the High Court in Edinburgh of being concerned in the supply of heroin between January 2002 and April last year in the Lochaber area.

The court heard from his defence agent that he was not a "Mr Big" and he was a heroin addict himself.

Police Scotland welcomed the sentence handed out to Cameron.

Cameron was caught following an intelligence-led police operation called Operation Parish which targeted those involved in the supply of heroin into the Fort William area.

In addition to this, last week two people were sentenced following the force’s Operation Azores, in the Inverness area. Kirsty McCulloch from Inverness is to serve almost nine years and Adil Nolan from the Merseyside area was handed a sentence of 31 months for offences under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971.

Detective Inspector Andy Logan said: "These cases are yet another example of our commitment to tackle the supply of drugs to the Highlands and Islands. Our message to those involved in this type of crime is that we will continue to pro-actively target those who are involved in the supply of controlled drugs into the our communities. Heroin has a devastating effect on people’s lives and causes misery in our communities."

He added: "We rely on the support of the public in supplying us with information to disrupt the supply of drugs and bring those responsible to justice. If you have information which can help us in the fight against drugs, please call Police on 101 or you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
