Dry's Olympic hopes crushed by GB selectors

MORAY hammer thrower Mark Dry has suffered Olympic heartache after missing out on selection for the GB team.

The British selectors chose Englishman Alex Smith as their sole hammer competitor in London, even though he has played second fiddle to Dry for most of the season so far.

Dry, from Burghead, lost out to Smith in the recent Olympic trials in Birmingham, but had beaten his rival in six of their seven previous meetings this year.

Smith needed two Olympic B standard throws to merit qualification and managed the second of those in a competition at the weekend.

Dry managed both his ‘B’ throws (above 74 metres) a number of weeks ago and had since gone on to throw two more, but Tuesday’s decision dashed the 24-year-old’s dream of competing in a home Olympics.

He has just returned from competing at the European Championships in Helsinki, Finland, where he threw 70.27 metres but failed to qualify for the final.

Don’t miss Friday’s Northern Scot for a full interview with Mark Dry on his Olympic heartbreak.
