THERE is just a week to go before the Great Northern Scot Baking Competition. And from what we hear from readers, it looks like being an exciting event.

Remember, we are asking local people to bake a sponge or cake with a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee theme – and youngsters under the age of 16 biscuits with a Jubilee theme.

They will all be judged at Marie Curie Cancer Care’s Blooming Great Tea Partyin Elgin Town Hall next Saturday, July 14.

‘The Northern Scot’ has linked up with the charity to raise money for the vital work it does in supporting cancer sufferers and their families.

The Tea Party will see teas, coffees and home-made bakes served with slices of the competition cakes – and there will be stalls and other attractions.

Scotty Dog will be dropping in for his afternoon tea, and will have gifts for all the children attending – and the event will be graced by the presence of Moray’s very own Jubilee Queen, Cheryl Thomson, in her coronation robes.

But ‘Scot’ readers have the chance to take centre stage with a display of their baking skills, which will be challenging for a range of superb prizes donated by the Bijou store and coffee shop in Batchen Street, Elgin.

Editor Mike Collins said: “It is the first time the newspaper has held a baking competition, and we hope readers respond in numbers. As well as testing their abilities, it is a chance for our bakers to contribute to a fund-raising charity event for a wonderful cause.

“The local Marie Curie group has attracted a fantastic response from the community in its first year, and this is a chance for the community to give it another boost by attending the tea party – and entering sponges and cakes on the Jubilee theme.

“It’s for all ages, and we hope youngsters get involved, too.” See your 'Scot' for an entry form and more details.
