Salmond seeks security for jobs in food firm sale plans

FIRST Minister Alex Salmond has sought assurances for workers of Vion UK, including 130 staff at the local Strath of Brydock site, that the company can be sold.

Last month the Dutch food firm announced that it had embarked on a process to sell its UK food businesses to concentrate on its core markets in the Netherlands and Germany and the development of its global ingredients business, leaving many workers fearing for their job security.

Mr Salmond has contacted the chairman of Vion UK for reassurances, but said a resolution may be some weeks away.

He said: “I have been in touch with the chairman of Vion UK to seek clarification of sale plans and assurances on the potential for business continuity in the ­interests of the local workforce.

“The negotiations are at a commercially sensitive stage, and we are not expecting a resolution for some weeks.
