Horrible history comes to life

THE ‘Horrible History’ of Moray will come to life this weekend.

The more macabre and gory side of area’s past will be the focus of the Festival of Museums event on Saturday and Sunday.

Three free events in Forres, Elgin and Findhorn will give people a chance to delve into the less well known side of local history.

At the Falconer Museum in Forres on Saturday, from 11am to 4pm, costumed interpreters will stage mock trials and sentence miscreants to be put in the pillory outside the museum. People are urged to bring their own rotten fruit to throw.

Also on Saturday, from 11am to 4pm, Elgin Museum medieval warriors will demonstrate weaponry and the dressing of a knight preparing for battle.

Visitors will be able to handle weapons and discuss battle tactics.

The Wolf of Badenoch will also return to explain why he laid waste to Elgin Cathedral.

At Findhorn Heritage Centre on Sunday, between 12noon and 5pm, the 17th century port of Findhorn will be brought to life – with wealthy local merchants haggling with salty sea captains to accumulate more money.

Findhorn was the major port for Moray, just before a storm swept the village away in 1702.

All these activities are part of the national celebration, Festival of Museums, co-ordinated by Museums Galleries Scotland.
