LOCAL volunteers are being sought to carry out regular 10 minute watches at specific coastal sites to help learn more about whales and dolphins in local waters.

The Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC) shorewatch relies on local community volunteers to monitor the presence of whales, dolphins and porpoises around Scotland. No experience is necessary, anyone interested in becoming a volunteer to help record vital data about whales and dolphins can signup, come along, and receive expert training.

Due to popular demand WDC will be holding Shorewatch training session at the Black Isle Leisure Centre, Fortrose for volunteers interested in watching from Chanonry Point on Saturday May 11 2013 (10.30am – 4pm), and at Nairn Sailing Club for volunteers interesting in watching from Nairn Leisure, on Sunday 26th May 2013 (10.30am – 4pm).

Information gathered by Shorewatchers will help protect the whales and dolphins in the future. So, if you like to get out and about and are keen to see more of your local wildlife then Shorewatch is for you.

WDC head of Scottish policy, Sarah Dolman, commented on the need for the Shorewatch Programme.

She said: "It is vital to understand which areas might be key habitat for these amazing animals. We basically need to have eyes on the sea around the entire Scottish coastline; this is why community participation is so important to the long term management of marine species and their homes."

In addition to learning how to identify whales and dolphins, volunteers have the opportunity to learn how to recognise and report any that may strand around Aberdeen’s coastline, will receive the latest whale and dolphin related news and will also learn how best to raise awareness of the threats whales and dolphins face in Scotland today.

Anya Mackay, a dedicated WDC Shorewatcher said: "I feel totally relaxed and recharged after a ten minute Shorewatch! You can leave all worries and stresses behind for a short while as you stand still and become one with nature.

"Even if you don’t spot a whale or dolphin you’re still rewarded with being able to see other wildlife, enjoy the ever changing colours of the sea and horizon, fill your lungs with fresh air...and there’s always the anticipation that a fin might just appear behind the next wave crest."

Booking is essential as places are limited. If you are interested in joining us or finding out more about the WDC Shorewatch Programme, please contact Kila Taylor by email shorewatch@whales.org or phone 01343 820 339.
