National Lottery funding boost for community groups in Aberdeen City and Shire

Community groups across Aberdeen City and Shire will be able to provide vital services and support for thousands of local people thanks to National Lottery funding announced today.

The latest round of funding from The National Lottery Community Fund is shared amongst 324 projects across Scotland, sharing in £10,909,040.

In Aberdeen an award of £127,952 to Pathway Services will allow the group to continue to deliver and develop their counselling service for women experiencing physical or emotional abuse in their own homes.

Over a three-year period, 375 women living in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire will benefit from therapy sessions and group work.

The funding will also allow 25 women with lived experience of domestic abuse court proceedings to train as peer-to-peer volunteers who will help deliver the sessions.

Malcolm Pritchard, Pathways Manager, said: “The funding we have received will enable us to continue to deliver counselling support to women who have experienced, or are continuing to experience, domestic abuse living in Aberdeen city and Shire, through a mixture of telephone and face-to-face counselling.

"Since its inception seven years ago the service has supported over 700 women, helping them to come to terms with the abuse they have faced and move on to happy, secure lives free of fear.”

An award of £58,200 to Aberdeen Action on Disability means the group will be able to support up to 2000 people who have a broad range of disabilities through their two year ‘Helpability’ project.

The funding will also allow them to provide bespoke benefits support and advice through 600 specialist consultations.

Barclay Bisset, Administration Officer, said: “We are delighted to receive support from The National Lottery, which will enable our organisation to continue its essential work in to supporting and assisting vulnerable people with disabilities and long-term health conditions to alleviate financial hardship, stress and disadvantage.”

Thanks to an award of £37,470, Aberdeen Foyer will be able to expand their Financial Inclusion Team, which works to address the impact of the rising cost-of-living.

The support will be offered to around 360 people over a 12-month period and will feature sessions on developing financial literacy, personal development, and employability.

Anne Kain, Head of Service for Education & Employability, said: “This funding will enable us to work alongside more people in our communities to reduce poverty, including child poverty. Creating these positive relationships increases opportunities for individuals and families to connect with our programmes, including sector-based training and employability skills, to break the generational cycle of poverty, tackling the root causes and enabling sustainable, long-term change."

In Aberdeenshire Banchory Bowling Club receive £9000 to replace part of a tin roof in their bowling pavilion while the Disabled Persons Housing Service (Aberdeenshire) receives £9828 to fund additional hours for a Housing Advisor to support people with physical disabilities, learning difficulties, sensory impairment and long-term health problems identify and bid for suitable social housing.

A new paved and landscaped area centred around their ceramic lighthouse created for the CLAN Cancer charity in Portsoy will be created thanks to a £10,000 donation to Portsoy 75 Club.

Scottish Families Affected by Alcohol and Drugs receive £71,668 for work in Aberdeenshire.

This charity will employ a second Family Worker to provide one-to-one support and group work sessions for family members affected by a loved one's drug and alcohol use in Aberdeenshire.

Over three years, 150 people will benefit from the opportunity to take part in this specialist training.

Scottish Men's Sheds will update their nationwide website and database, which is crucial for the network of over 200 men's sheds across Scotland and the 3000 plus membership thanks to support of £9312 while the The Seed Box receive £10,000 Aberdeenshire to install a cabin in Banchory for their outdoor therapy and horticultural training project for adults with additional support needs.

In the city -

City Aberdeen Action on Disability - £58,200 to deliver benefits advice,support and social activities to people with a broad range of disabilities in Aberdeen.

Aberdeen Foyer - £37,470 to employ an additional advisor to join their Financial Inclusion Team expanding their provision in Aberdeen.

Aberdeen Sports Village - £10,000 to deliver free one hour sport sessions and provide a hot meal for children in the areas surrounding their complex in Aberdeen.

Autism and Neurodiversity North Scotland - £10,000 to employ an Employability Support Worker to assist autistic and neurodiverse people in improving their prospects of finding and retaining work.

Family Foundations - £10,000 to offer therapeutic play and holistic support to children and families experiencing a range of difficulties and challenges in Garthdee, Aberdeen.

Home-Start Aberdeen - £163,114 to continue the roles of Volunteer Coordinator and Family Support Coordinator, supporting families experiencing difficulties in Aberdeen.

North Scottish Area Boys' Brigade - £9800 to deliver a host of training events for Volunteer Leaders from Boys Brigades across the North of Scotland.

Pathways Services - £127,952 to continue to deliver and develop their counselling service for women experiencing physical or emotional abuse in their own homes.

Rape Crisis Grampian - £126,086, this groups Young Person's Support Service will continue and develop a range of one to one and groupwork support to young people 13-24 years of age in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire who have experienced sexual abuse.

Team Jak Foundation - £9,840 to offer sessions for teenagers with cancer in Aberdeen and surrounds.

Touch of Love Outreach - £10,000 to set up a foodbank in the Torry neighbourhood of Aberdeen.
