The Scottish Conservative MSP for Aberdeenshire West said he is “extremely disappointed” at proposals to demolish the historical lamp posts surrounding the Duke of Richmond statue in the Square.

In a series of letters to chief executive Jim Savege, Mr Burnett wants the council to review its decision, have a consultation with Huntly Community Council and submit an appropriate planning application to give residents the opportunity to object to the plans.

The MSP, who has spoken with residents this week on the issue, believes the street lights are of significant emotional importance to Huntly and removing them would undermine the area’s location as a conservation area.

A petition calling for the council to reconsider its plans has gathered more than 800 signatures, with residents stating that the lights must remain to preserve the heritage of the town square.

Scottish Conservative MSP for Aberdeenshire West, Mr Burnett, said: “It’s extremely disappointing that there are plans to demolish the remaining street lights surrounding the Duke of Richmond statue, without consulting the community.

“These lamp posts are a focal point for the beautiful town square and have historical and emotional importance within the centre of the conservation area. They are also used for Christmas displays which attracts people into the square.

“While I understand the financial pressures facing Aberdeenshire Council imposed on them by the Scottish Government, this isn’t a service – it’s an integral part of Huntly’s identity and heritage.

“The way these proposals have been brought to the attention of the public through the back door has been unacceptable and the public petition shows the strength of anger towards this.

“I have again written to the council urging them to take notice of the petition, review its decision and launch a proper consultation with residents through an appropriate planning application.”
