MSP Karen Adam is hosting a potentially life-saving naloxone training session in a significant move to tackle the devastating impacts of drug-related overdoses in the area.

The training will be held at the Aberdeen Foyer Community Hub in Drummers Corner, Peterhead, on Friday, June 23, from 10am - midday.

Naloxone administration already saves an average of one life per week across the north-east and can reverse the effects of opioids such as heroin, methadone, opium, codeine or morphine.

Recognising the devastating impacts of drug-related deaths on individuals, families and the wider community, MSP Karen Adam has stepped up to organise this critical training session.

Ms Adam has reached out to community groups and local councillors, inviting them to the life-saving training session.

The Banffshire and Buchan Coast representative is also issuing an open call to organisations and people across the constituency asking them to register for the naloxone event.

Due to limited availability, organisations and individuals wishing to attend should contact Karen.Adam.MSP@Parliament.scot to express an interest.

Ms Adam said: "Scotland was the first country in the world to introduce a national naloxone programme.

"The more people we have trained to use this life-saving medicine, the more lives we can save.

"I hope that through initiatives like this, we can all contribute toward creating a real difference in our communities across Banffshire and Buchan Coast.

“Naloxone is a medicine that can temporarily halt the effects of an overdose from a number of drugs and it's safe to use even if you are uncertain whether any drugs have been taken.

“The training session is open to community groups, as well as the general public, ensuring that the potential for positive community impact is maximised.

"Attendees will learn how to administer naloxone and the crucial steps to take in an overdose emergency.

“Please reach out to me if you as an individual, or a community group, business, charity or organisation are at all interested in attending.

"Availability is limited so please email me to express an interest, this is an opportunity for the community to come together and make a real difference in potentially saving lives.”

It is hoped that this session will mark the beginning of increased awareness and proactive measures taken within the local community to combat the scourge of drug deaths in Scotland.
