Aberdeenshire East MSP Gillian Martin has met with the Cabinet Secretary for Net Zero, Energy and Transport Michael Matheson to discuss the findings of a survey report launched to document the ongoing challenges and opportunities faced by energy workers.
It comes after Ms Martin launched a survey in summer last year to gauge how workers who wanted to transition from oil and gas were managing as part of a Just Transition.
The survey found just one in 10 workers in the North Sea oil and gas industry say they have enough opportunities to switch to renewables.
More than 500 workers responded to the survey providing testimony on a range of issues including doubling up of certifications to work in both sectors, discrimination against oil and gas workers and opportunities for transition pathways.
Ms Martin shared the findings with both the UK and Scottish Governments and has now met the Cabinet Secretary Michael Matheson in a meeting at the Scottish Parliament this week.
Commenting, Gillian Martin MSP said: “I had a very constructive meeting with the Cabinet Secretary this week to discuss the findings of my report.
“It is clear the Cabinet Secretary and his team welcome the contribution made by workers to this survey in helping create a detailed idea of what opportunities and barriers exist in the industry.
“The oil and gas industry will continue to remain important to the north-east and Scotland as a whole and there are also opportunities in the renewables sector for workers to transition and go between sectors too.
“It is important energy companies, industry bodies and trade unions can engage with each other to help support workers eager to continue developing their careers in both oil and gas and renewables.
“I look forward to continued engagement with the Scottish Government and working together to facilitate opportunities to highlight the issues raised in the survey report.”
