Aberdeenshire East MSP Gillian Martin has backed an annual campaign which helps raise awareness of both young carers and young adult carers and the contribution they make to help family members or friends.

It comes as a survey carried out during the coronavirus pandemic showed high levels of anxiety and stress among young carers.

The survey by the Carers Trust showed that more than 70 percent of carers aged 12 to 17 years old and 85 percent of young adult carers aged 18 to 25 years old have experienced increased concern for their futures as a result of the pandemic.

Young Carers Action Day (YCAD) has taken place over the last six years to raise awareness of the immense contribution made by young carers to their families and local communities through helping support someone due to illness, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction.

This year’s theme is Protect Young Carers’ Futures and the campaign recommends a national action plan for young carers to be introduced in Scotland.

Commenting Gillian Martin said: “I’m supporting Young Carers Action Day because it’s vital we help support young people who help support family members.

"The work makes a huge contribution to society and it isn’t often very visible to wider society.

“The pandemic has undoubtedly added an additional layer of pressure for young carers and it’s important we can help recognise this work not just today, but every day by looking at additional ways they can be offered support.”
