Aberdeen Student Show has announced its latest charity production will be a Granite City parody of the award-winning film and musical, Moulin Rouge!

Mounthoolin Rouge! takes to the stage of Aberdeen’s His Majesty’s Theatre in April next year, marking the 103rd year of the Aberdonian tradition.

The show title was teased out online this week and was announced by student administrators this morning on Original 106FM.

Fourth-year Physiotherapy student Meg Stanger, the show's Administrator said: “I am so excited to finally announce the title of our next production.

"It has been so hard to keep a secret.

"The Administration Team had a quick turnaround.

"There was not a lot of time between the last performance of Ayetanic and the first meeting for next year’s production.”

Meg, who is no stranger to the HMT stage, will be performing in her fourth and final Student Show, hopes that Mounthoolin Rouge! will raise even more money than this year’s production of ‘Ayetanic’ which raised a record-breaking amount of over £125,000 for 50 local charities.

Hoping to deliver a spectacular show is director, Kenneth Lypka. The 31-year-old trainee piping engineer is no stranger to Student Show having been involved in five Student Shows throughout his time at university.

Lypka said, “I was absolutely delighted when Meg asked me to be the Director of the next production.

"I am so excited but also terrified. I’m working with a fabulous Script Team this year, I’m joined by Hannah Cook and returning script editor Alison Sandison. Aberdeen Student Show holds such a special place in the city's heart and I can’t wait to return to HMT once again”

Mounthoolin Rouge! will feature the theatre group's signature Doric humour; telling the tale of Gregor McEwan, a young lad who moves to the bright lights of Aberdeen. He and his pals find themselves wrapped up in the mesmerising spectacle of the Mounthoolin Rouge! a new club on the Mounthooly roundabout. The club was built as the council’s latest attempt to win back public favour but when the club is at risk of closing forever, will they be able to save the day?

Kenneth can’t wait to put a local spin on Moulin Rouge! “I love how melodramatic the movie is and how music is such an intrinsic part of it. The updated stage adaptation took it to a whole other level and I can’t wait to add our signature Doric twist to this legend, film and stage show. I’m eager to get started.”

Apache North Sea’s support during Aberdeen Student Show’s AYETANIC campaign, along with the support of other companies, helped them to achieve a record-breaking total for local charities.

The student-led society is thrilled to announce that they have teamed up with Apache once again, with the company set to be the title sponsor for 2024.

This year, Apache has donated an initial £20,000, and if the students can match the donation with sponsorship from other companies, Apache will double the original contribution. This will ensure that all overhead costs will be covered by sponsorships, allowing every penny from ticket sales to go directly to the charities supported by the Aberdeen Student Show.

This announcement comes at the end of an exciting week for Aberdeen Student Show, which was recently nominated for ‘Scot’s Project O’ The Year’ at the Scots Language Awards for their notable fundraising efforts and in special recognition of their recent success.

The ballot boxes are and audiences can vote via the Scots Language Award’s website.

Tickets for Mounthoolin Rouge!, which will run at His Majesty’s Theatre from April 24th-27th 2024, will go on sale at Aberdeen Box Office later this year.
