Motorhomes causing ‘burden’ on A9, A95 and A96 says Moray councillor asking for levy introduction

Calls have been made to introduce a levy on motorhomes and campervans in the hope of raising funds for local authorities.

Councillor Jérémie Fernandes (SNP/Elgin City North) says the vehicles should be included in the recently enacted Visitor Levy legislation.

The Transient Visitor Levy, which is similar to a tourist tax, sees a certain amount of money paid to a local authority every time someone stays in accommodation such as hotels, bed and breakfasts or holiday cottages.

The money can then be used by local authorities such as Moray Council to fund critical infrastructure investments.

But Cllr Fernandes believes the legislation should go further by including motorhomes and campervans.

He said: “Motorhomes and campervans place a considerable burden on our roads, parking facilities, and waste disposal systems.

"With the growing popularity of these vehicles among tourists, we are witnessing increased congestion on key routes such as the A9, A96, and A95.

“This congestion not only impacts local residents but also accelerates the wear and tear on our infrastructure.”

In July, Moray Council banned overnight stays next to Alice Littler Park leading to complaints that the measure would deter visitors such as motorhome users from returning.

But Cllr Fernandes believes that introducing a levy for motorhome and campervan users is “only fair” and will help with the “upkeep” of Moray.

He added: “To maintain and improve our infrastructure, it's only fair that all visitors, regardless of how they travel, contribute to the upkeep of our region.

"Including motorhomes and campervans in the visitor levy will ensure that we can reinvest in our roads, parking areas, and waste facilities, ultimately enhancing the experience for both tourists and residents alike."
