SUPERMARKET chain Morrisons has unveiled its plan for a new store in Banff – promising to create 120 new jobs.

The store is set to be built at Canal Park, between Princess Royal Park and the Co-op, on common good land that councillors on the Banff and Buchan area committee agreed to sell in August.

Morrisons' proposed development includes a brand-new petrol station, an electric vehicle charging point and a car park, with the store to offer a specialist butcher, baker and fishmonger.

A planning application for the new store will shortly be submitted to Aberdeenshire Council.

However, many residents have long since voiced concerns about the plans – which would spell the end for the football pitch and pavilion at Canal Park.

Facebook group Save Our Canal Park was launched in April of last year and now has almost 1000 members.

Aberdeenshire Council's decision to sell the land was made despite 62.7 per cent of people who responded to a public consultation expressing concerns.

James Smith, senior development manager at Morrisons, said the plans will create "valued employment" and "improve shopping choice" in the town.

He said: “This application gives a wonderful opportunity to deliver a brand-new, purpose-built Morrisons store in Banff, with all the benefits that will bring to the community.

"Our investment will create valued local employment and improve shopping choice for local residents.

“We want to hear your views so please visit the consultation website for more information and to let us know what you think of the plans.”

Leaflets are set to drop through the doors locally in the coming days and weeks, while an online consultation process has already been launched.

Locals can give their views online via a feedback form at morrisons-banff.co.uk.
