Moray's MP has sought "reassurances" from SSE over how it will consult on its plans for a new substation on the outskirts of Keith

Douglas Ross says he's been contacted by several townsfolk who are angry they only received flyers the day before an open day was held regarding SSE's plans to build Blackhillock 2.

Keith Community Council, meanwhile, was not informed of the event on May 21 at all.

Mr Ross has therefore asked SSE for another open day to be held.

SSEN has cited issues with Royal Mail as the reason for the late invitations, after a previously planned open day on May 7 had to be postponed due to severe weather.

In addition, the company says the project is only in the very early stages of development and that the open day was just one of a number of engagement events it will be holding.

The energy company wants to build the Blackhillock 2 substation on Banff Road, by Drum Farm.

It already operates the first Blackhillock on land about a mile east of the town, off the A96.

Mr Ross said: "Many constituents in Keith have contacted me about their concerns over not being informed of this crucial open day.

"It is understandable that they were frustrated given the impact this substation will have on the areas close to where it is being proposed.

"Having recently visited SSE’s Blackhillock substation, I know the impact of the current site, so it’s absolutely vital that the company engages fully with local people and community groups.

"Ensuring this project is developed with the community in mind should be at the heart of SSE’s thinking.

"To ensure that happens I will be continuing to liaise closely as the plans develop."
