MORE than 130 spirits industry notables came to Mulben this week to learn about the heat recovery technology which Glentauchers Distillery had successfully implemented.

The system captures and recycles the heat generated in distillation that would otherwise go to waste.

This has helped the distillery near Keith to cut in half both its energy consumption and carbon emissions.

It's estimated that applying the same technology just to malt distilleries alone would save enough energy to power 605,000 homes for a year – that's more than Edinburgh and Aberdeen combined.

Brian MacAulay, Chivas Brothers' malt distilling and operations director, called the Glentauchers Open House event a huge success.

He added: "Meeting so many people from across the industry facilitated discussions about the ways in which we can learn and evolve to benefit each other, the industry at large, and of course reduce our impact on the planet.

"Although not every distillery will be able to implement heat recovery technologies, they have huge potential to accelerate our collective journey to net zero.

"As a business, we’re committed to opening up to shape the future of whisky.

"Industry collaboration will be vital in creating a sustainable home for Scotch in the years to come."

Chivas Brothers has committed itself to becoming carbon neutral distillation by the end of 2026. It recently announced a £60 million planned investment over the next three years to accelerate the roll-out of technology across its distilleries.
