Moray is under a yellow warning for wind and rain, with a regional "flood alert" in place for Findhorn, Nairn, Moray and Speyside.

Large parts of the north east and Aberdeenshire are currently subject to amber warnings for wind and rain – with a rare red alert for rain in South Aberdeenshire and Angus. Flood warnings have also been issued across the region.

Moray, however, is only under a yellow warning for wind and rain, with a regional "flood alert" in place for Findhorn, Nairn, Moray and Speyside but no specific "flood warnings".

Despite impacts expected to be less severe, a council spokesperson urged Moray residents to be cautious of the potential effects of the storm.

The prolonged period of strong easterly winds, peaking through Thursday and early Friday brings the potential for disruption, especially to travel. Dangerous driving conditions are anticipated, primarily due to spray and flooded roads. Motorists should exercise caution on the roads and travel disruptions may also occur due to road closures, leading to longer journey times. Additionally, there is a possibility of cancellation affecting various modes of public transport – ScotRail have already closed the Elgin to Aberdeen railway line.

Moray Council have also warned extensive flooding to homes and businesses is possible, which could lead to the collapse or damage of buildings and structures. Fast-flowing or deep floodwater is also likely, creating a significant danger to life.

As a result of the strong wind and heavy rain, Moray residents should also be prepared for the loss of power, gas, water and mobile phone service, particularly in flooded areas.

There also a small chance that injuries could occur due to either flying debris inland, or due to large waves around coasts and Moray Council have advised the public to stay away from areas at risk of flooding and wave overtopping including cliff edges, coastlines and harbour walls.

The current Met Office yellow alert for wind in Moray is in place from 3am on Thursday 19 October until 12pm Friday 20 October and for rain from 6am on Thursday until 6pm on Friday.

The Met Office have also extended their weather warnings for the north-east, red and amber alerts have been extended and are now in place across Aberdeenshire to Turriff and Banff. Aberdeenshire Council's information and advice can be found here and further information on how Storm Babet effect the north-east is available here.
