Mid Formartine Fair Trade event celebrates 30th anniversary

A unique annual shopping event showcasing the variety and skill of artisans from across the world is celebrating its 30th year next month.

Mid Formartine Fair Trade Group’s Open House sale takes place at Bonnyton Farm, Pitmedden from November 7-12 and will be open daily from 10am-10pm.

A wide range of Fair Trade foodstuffs, gifts, cards and clothing from countries as diverse as Mongolia and Peru will be available.

Organiser and chairwoman of the Mid Formartine group, Anne Aspden, explained that what began as a one-off coffee morning for friends three decades ago has continued to grow into something of a community event.

She said: “30 years ago it was impossible to source fairly traded goods in the supermarket and I wanted to share what I had found for my family with friends and neighbours.

"It grew to become a one-day event then spread over a weekend until now we are going to open for a whole six days – it’s practically a Fair Trade festival.

“Last year more than 400 people passed through the doors and we raised a phenomenal £8000.

“It’s not just about the shopping. It is an important way to raise awareness and showcase the amazing range of Fair Trade items which are now available, ensuring the workers creating these wonderful products are paid a fair price for them and operate in decent working conditions.”

As well as the opportunity to shop, teas, coffees and traybakes are on offer each day as well as a bowl of soup at lunchtime.

“It’s a great way to bring the community together and showcase Fair Trade at the same time. “ Anne added.

The 10-strong Mid Formartine Fair Trade Group has another reason to celebrate with the recent renewal of its Fair Trade area status.
