Major Mick’s 'Tintanic II' nears end of epic fundraising journey for Alzheimer’s Research UK
AN 80-YEAR-OLD retired Scots Dragoon Guard who set sail in a homemade tin boat is nearing the end of his four-month fundraiser for Alzheimer’s Research UK.
Major Michael Stanley, better known as Major Mick, has taken his Tintanic II boat – made from two sheets of corrugated iron – on a tour of waterways around the UK this summer, including at Banff and Loch Ness.
Cheered on by TV presenter and adventurer Ben Fogle, Mick is rowing 100 miles on rivers, canals and open water across Scotland, England and Wales. He set off from Henley on Thames on May 28.
Major Mick was inspired to take on the challenge after seeing the devastating effect of Alzheimer’s disease on his friends and family.
Ben will once again be supporting the Major as his adventure draws to a close tomorrow, Wednesday, September 29.
Mick will be greeted by a reception committee at the Chichester Canal basin, and will then meet Ben for a special presentation.
Major Mick has raised nearly £9,000 for Alzheimer’s Research UK.
Ian Wilson, deputy CEO at Alzheimer’s Research UK, said: "Our vital research is only made possible thanks to our incredible supporters, and we’re so grateful to Major Mick for supporting Alzheimer’s Research UK.
"Dementia affects a significant proportion of the population – one in three people over 65 in the UK will die with some form of the condition. Fantastic fundraising efforts like this will help us to make life-changing research breakthroughs for people with dementia."
