An Aberdeenshire woman has turned trash into cash and won £100 thanks to an innovative partnership.

Susi and her family are the latest LitterLotto winners.
Susi and her family are the latest LitterLotto winners.

Susi McLarty is the latest winner of the partnership between environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful and behaviour change app LitterLotto.

The partnership was launched in November 2022 and offers monthly prizes to encourage more people to bin their litter.

Susi, who lives in Huntly, says she has always picked up litter on the beach but now does it more regularly, and is supporting an application for funding to do community litter picks and have equipment available in the local town.

She said: “The more [litter] you pick the more you see, I am more aware of litter in certain areas.

“I do not think it has reduced but hopefully our community will get together to tackle it and educate everyone the importance of binning it.”

Susi says there is lots of litter in her area and thinks innovative initiatives are needed to tackle the litter emergency.

“I came to the realisation that there needs to be a community behind the change required,” she said. “We have a number of people in the community who do a great job litter picking but it is a bigger issue than just a few people, therefore we are starting a campaign called Keep Huntly Beautiful.

“My children litter pick with me regularly, and we have our first community litter pick planned for April 5.”

She added: “I love spending time with my children at the beach collecting sea glass and litter picking or going away in our campervan. I used to teach sailing for a living so have a love of the sea and all things natural.

“I work in the great outdoors and understand how valuable it is to our health and well-being.”

Heather McLaughlin, Campaigns Coordinator at Keep Scotland Beautiful, said: “I’m delighted to see that Susi has been rewarded for doing the right thing through our partnership with LitterLotto.

“This collaboration is all about encouraging people to help tackle the country’s litter emergency and it’s brilliant to see people across the country continuing their efforts to keep Scotland beautiful and I’m looking forward to seeing many more Scottish winners.”

Carly Di Crescienzo, Local Authority Campaigns Manager at LitterLotto, said: “It's great to see our Scottish users benefiting from this regional jackpot.

“We hope that our partnership with Keep Scotland Beautiful will encourage others to get involved.

“Our users help keep their communities clean and green and with LitterLotto you can win cash while doing good.”

The LitterLotto app is available to download for free on the App Store and Android Store.

This innovative venture is one of the many ways Keep Scotland Beautiful is tackling the litter emergency. The Scottish Litter Survey, published by the charity in November 2023, found that 90% of people believe that litter is a problem across the country.

Keep Scotland Beautiful’s 2024 Spring Clean challenge is currently underway. Visit the LitterLotto website for more information on how to turn trash into cash and help reverse Scotland’s litter emergency.
