The Parish Church in Kintore had set a challenge to everyone in the area who happen to have lawn-mowers to help with a community-wide tidy-up of all the small green spaces around the town.

As the Council have not been able to do much of their regular landscaping work during lockdown, they have called on communities to support them in this work.

The Rev Neil Meyer commented: “It was an idea I had after a walk around the town last week.

“I noticed all the green spaces that have not been tended for the 10 weeks of lockdown.”

The Parish Church had enlisted the help of some local farmers who had the necessary machinery to mow the main parts of the Primary school playing fields and they also had several church members who accepted the challenge.

They had hoped to get everyone else in the community involved with the tidying up around the town on Saturday, June 6.

This has now been possibly postponed to a later day after organisers were contacted by the council.

The parish Church had asked everyone to take on the cutting and tidying of any small grass space near their homes and where there are larger parks.

Rev Neil Meyer said: “I tried to contact Landscape Services at Gordon House to ascertain what guidelines they could provide for us to do such a project.”

Landscape Services at Gordon House contacted the Church and said: “Aberdeenshire Council will be issuing further guidance next week to ensure all groups provide a consistent and safe approach to helping us with such matters.

“Once we have this we will be back in touch.”

On Facebook, the church said: “The Parish Church apologises for this postponement to the challenge.

“We have been overwhelmed by the positive response to this challenge and delighted by the strong sense of community spirit and pride in the beauty of our town.

“For those who have already tidied some of the green spaces, we thank you.”

Rev Meyer added: “Well now of course the project needs to be postponed.

“It was likely we would have done so anyway due to the weather (there is rain forecast for Saturday) but I just hope the enthusiasm isn’t dampened by the Council’s response.”
