A kayaker who's attempting a solo journey around Scotland is currently off the Moray coast.

.

Stuart Marshall set off on the 1800km adventure on May 10 to raise funds for MND research.

His Facebook blog details the many hazards and risks in the weeks since.

These include encounters with large ships, sandbanks, strong tides, storms and heavy seas.

He's been accompanied by gannets, razorbills, puffins, gulls, eagles, seals and occasionally sea kayaking companions.

He's rested mostly in wild campsites, but has also benefitted from the kind help of locals.

He has endured blisters, a sore back, banged knees, weathered hands, broken tent poles, faulty rudder mechanisms, leaky hatch covers and the loss of travel mugs to the surf gods.

He's found inspiration to carry on from Scotland's beautiful beaches and dramatic cliffs.

Stuart said: "Life works in unpredictable ways. From here in my floating seat, I’ve been able to reflect that it is a beautiful world but it's more difficult for some.

"MND is a terminal condition that is little understood and is unrelenting.

"My experience in undertaking this long-distance paddle is nothing in comparison to the MND diagnosis one of my neighbours received earlier this year.

"Research into MND condition management and, ultimately, a cure needs funding urgently.

"Thanks to all of you who have enjoyed my adventures and given so generously."

.

Today is the Global Day of MND awareness.

Stuart is now in the home stretch of his journey, having raised more than £5700 so far.

It's estimated that he will arrive at the finish line – the Aberdeen Boat Club – at 5pm on Wednesday.
