Testing has begun this week on the internal structure of Aboyne Bridge as efforts continue to find a solution to its reinstatement.

Inspection hatches have been broken through on the bridge so that internal investigations work can start.

A spokesperson for Aberdeenshire Council said: “We have now started physical testing works at Aboyne Bridge as part of our detailed investigations into the condition of the structure. The work involves breaking out access hatches in the carriageway on the River Dee span, allowing manned entry into the chambers so inspection and testing of the internal concrete elements can be carried out.”

They continued: “Pedestrians/cyclist access is being maintained on the footways - with pedestrians on one side and cyclists using the other. A limited closure of one footway at a time is required to allow roped access to the outer faces of the River Dee span and we appreciate users’; patience as these works are carried out.”

This element of the critical works is expected to take four weeks.
