A SHOP which provides valuable experience for people with physical and learning disabilities was chosen as winner of Huntly Community Council's annual Halloween window competition.

Clients and staff at Inspired By on Duke Street were over the moon when the news was broken to them.

Both windows had been filled with seasonal displays which had been created following an ideas sharing session with all the clients and the team who work with them.

Support manager Shona Goodall said: "It was a real team effort and they were just so pleased when they heard we were the winners."

The shop works with six clients who live in supported accommodation in the town, also operated by the charity.

The clients are involved in all aspects of the shop from serving customers to sorting donations as they arrive.

At the rear of the shop there is a workshop where people are able to do all kinds of arts and crafts.

Lately, they have been busy making poppies and poppy wreaths which will feature in their next special window display for Remembrance Day.

The poppies and wreaths, made from felt, recycled plastic bottles and cupcake cases are also available for sale.

Ms Goodall said: "Clients really get involved and we have the plan for the Remembrance windows and then Christmas displays, they really enjoy it."

Part of the programme includes weekly visits to the Royal Oak to play pool and darts and next month regular outings for swimming and bowling will resume.

Cash raised from shop sales helps to support the programme of activities enjoyed by clients and donations are always welcomed.

Clothes for men, women and children, are always welcomed along with toys, bric a brac, books and CDs.

The shop cannot accept larger items of furniture, underwear or swimwear.

It is open 9.40 to 4.30pm Monday to Saturday and donations can be dropped off at any time.
