Making a welcome return on Sunday, the Ellon Pedal Car Race saw the town centre transformed into a racing circuit for a variety of events which took place over the course of the day, cumulating the headline race.

The events of the day started with a series of cycle races organised by the Ythan Cycle Club, under the auspices of Scottish Cycling, starting with races for the under 8s, under 10s, under 12s, under 14s and under 16s age groups in the morning and which saw nearly 100 participants take to the town centre circuit.

An all ages fun run preceded an appearance from Yees Hung Ga and dancers on Market Street.

Crowds continued to build up for the Pedal Car Race which this year saw 18 teams entered, welcoming back some old and familiar faces as well as some new competitors who were out to prove their worth on what is, as many will testify a challenging track.

The event which acts as a fundraiser for Friends of Anchor, the Aberdeen based cancer charity was started by Aberdeen FC goalkeeper, Joe Lewis who also donated a signed Aberdeen shirt which was raffled on the day.

Having previously paraded around the town centre, the pedal cars are lined up along both sides of the road, with nine a side ready for the Le Mans style start which saw a mad dash and starting grid chaos as the vehicles got that much needed push start.

Racing against the clock with a 3pm deadline, there was much swapping of the places, but streaking ahead were the experienced team from the Ythanview Hotel in Methlick, who while never having won the race have been top four placed in their five previous attempts and were ones to watch.

Behind them there was some swapping of places with the Newburgh Dunes Running Club, Ellon Mamils and Tollbooth all in contention.

But it was the Ythanview who held firm to come home in a time of 50min 41sec with a best lap of 1min 31.275 sec recorded on their second lap and finishing 29 laps.

Coming a close second were the Newburgh Dune's Running club just 10.53 seconds behind.
