A packed harbour front at Peterhead welcomed the much anticipated arrival of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight's Lancaster over the town as part of a display marking Scottish Week.
Lancaster PA474 was built at the Vickers Armstrong Broughton factory at Hawarden Airfield, Chester on 31 May 1945, just after VE day and is currently sporting two paint schemes.
The left-hand side represents 460 (RAAF) Squadron Lancaster W5005, coded AR-L “Leader”, which had nose art of a kangaroo playing bagpipes, indicating the Australian and Scottish backgrounds of one of its crews.
The right side carries the 50 Squadron code letters VN-T, representing the Lancaster flown by FO Douglas Millikin DFC – grandfather of the BBMF’s current Officer Commanding, Squadron Leader Andy “Milli” Millikin.
Joining the display was an operational Typhoon from the RAF which flew alongside the Lancaster and then put on a display by itself of high powered acrobatic action, before the arrival of the world famous Red Arrows, whose display included many of their signature formations and fly-bys including creating a giant heart with an arrow through it over Peterhead harbour.
Scottish Week rounds off in the town on Saturday and Sunday, while aviation fans can see a display taking place over Lossiemouth on Saturday afternoon (weather dependent).
