PUPILS from Macduff Primary School have raised more than £1000 for Ukrainian children after holding a series of fundraisers recently.

Children from the school's P5W class were so shocked after watching a report of the conflict on CBBC's Newsround that they decided to help in any way they could.

That saw the class make bracelets, bookmarks and cakes to raise an initial £325. Parents and grandparents also got involved to make sunflower brooches - Ukraine's national flower.

Technology company Schlumberger matched the donation to bring the total up to £650 after an employee at the company, one of the pupil's parents, had got them involved with the fundraising.

The school's fundraising didn't stop there. The P7 class also sold 'lucky square' numbers and items they had made at a local Farmers' Market. That raised a further £524 to take the whole school fundraising effort to over £1000.

Saffron Watt, the school's P5W teacher, said: "It amazed me how much the children were able to raise from all their own ideas.

"Weekends and school holidays were spent creating loom band bracelets and key rings, making 'Hama-bead' designs and much more, as they were so eager to help after being appalled by what some of the children are going through in Ukraine.

"They are an incredibly thoughtful bunch and I am so proud of them all."

The money raised has been donated to UNICEF who are helping children affected by the conflict in Ukraine.
