ACCLAIMED Huntly singer, Iona Fyfe has recorded another major achievement in her career.

Last weekend, the 23 year old became the first singer to win the coveted title of Musician of the Year at the MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards.

A fierce advocate for the official recognition of the Scots Language, she made her acceptance speech in her mother tongue, thanking the musicians who have been influential in her career to date.

Ms Fyfe told The Huntly Express: "It was totally lovely be recognised with the award for musician of the year. Often, singers aren't thought of as musicians. I think I was the first singer and the youngest musician to win this award, so it feels extra special to be recognised.

"This past two years have been turbulent to say the least, with even more cancellations coming in due to the new variant, but the award really gives me a boost looking at 2022 and beyond."

Ms Fyfe has a new single out on December 20, a Scots translation of Poor Ditching Boy, originally written by Richard Thompson of Fairport Convention in 1972.

He wrote it after reading Lewis Grassic Gibbon's Sunset Song, which is based in Aberdeenshire.

Ms Fyfe said: "It just felt natural to translate the song into Doric, the dialect of Scots."
