Huntly’s Bikery aims to recycle old bikes

Gordon MP Richard Thomson has said The Bikery on Huntly’s Gordon Street is “extremely impressive” and has praised the work being done there by Gordon Rural Action.
The MP visited Gordon Rural Action to be updated on a number of local projects, such as the Bikery – which operates from a former bakery – as well as the foodbank and baby bank run by the organisation.
Commenting after his visit, Richard Thomson MP said: “It is fair to say that Huntly, in common with most small towns in rural Scotland has suffered in recent years from the downturn in the retail sector due to changing shopping patterns.
“However, speaking to Gordon Rural Action, and Huntly Development Trust whom I also met, there is a real buzz about the town from the number of projects currently being brought to fruition to repurpose vacant properties in the main shopping area.
“In terms of the ‘The Bikery’, this is an extremely impressive operation utilising an old bakery with the aim of providing access to recycled bicycles at affordable prices and supporting active travel and healthy lifestyles whilst keeping the cost low.
"This latter point is particularly important given the pockets of deprivation in the town.
“Development of this facility will also assist with the economy of the town, creating job and volunteering opportunities, leading to increased employability and skill levels.
“I also heard about the work done by GRA on the local foodbank and baby bank.
"While it’s a sad fact of modern life that these are necessary, the team there are doing a power of work to ensure that local people are supported at a time of need.
"All in all, Huntly is in a stronger position as a result of the work of Gordon Rural Action and Huntly Development Trust.”
