The Gordon Schools hosts sustainability week to promote environmental awareness to pupils

THE Gordon Schools has recently taken part in a week-long sustainability event to promote environmental awareness to pupils.
The school's sustainability week, which was focussed on learning about responsible consumption and production, took place from May 22 — May 26 and finished with a sustainability fair on Friday (May 26), where pupils were able to learn more about eco-friendly practices from local organisations.
Sibylle McLeod, Principal Modern Languages Teacher at The Gordon Schools said: "At TGS we are committed to embedding Learning for Sustainability and the UN Charta of the Rights for the Child into our curriculum.
"We organised a week focussing on sustainability development goal 12: responsible consumption and production, where the S1-S3 pupils were learning about the carbon footprint of food (local versus imported) and clothing (fast fashion versus second hand and ethically produced), circular economy, waste minimisation and recycling, repurposing, repairing, reducing and refusing e.g. single use plastic."
During the week, pupils learned about sustainability in classes and some students even had the chance to garden and litter pick.
Pupils were also able to meet with representatives from local organisations at the fair, held in the John Swan Atrium, where representatives from Gordon Rural Action, Deveron Projects, Forestry Commission and Huntly Development Trust were invited.
The event was well supported and enjoyed by all participants and gave pupils to opportunity to learn more from stallholders, including Aberdeenshire Council, Robert Gordon University, ScotDec and Grassetstyle to learn more about sustainable career paths and environmentally friendly choices.
The event finished with food from the S3 Home Economics pupils, who were able to show off their hospitality skills as they prepared and served delicious vegetarian food at break time and lunch time for all visitors and staff of The Gordon Schools.
