A HUNTLY man has turned his trash into cash, winning £250 through an innovative environmental partnership.

Samuel Phillips won the money through a partnership between charity Keep Scotland Beautiful and behaviour change phone app LitterLotto.

Huntly's Samuel Phillips has earned £250 for litter picking.

The partnership, launched in November 2022, encourages more people to bin their litter and offers weekly prizes ranging from £50 to £500.

Samuel has always been a litter picker but says the issue in his area is a constant concern.

“I tend to focus on picking in and around the green spaces of Huntly,” he said.

“I would definitely say it looks better, but it’s a constant task to maintain since there is about an average of 50 pieces of new litter discarded every day within the area I walk.”

After finding out about the partnership on social media, Samuel has managed to get his partner involved too. However, more helps is needed

He said: “I cannot state how much litter there is exactly, other than there is far too much within the town, the green spaces, and on the roadside leaving and entering Huntly.

“But this can be seen anywhere across the north east. I definitely believe initiatives like this are needed to help."

Catherine Gee, deputy chief executive at Keep Scotland Beautiful, said: “I’m delighted to see that Samuel has been rewarded for doing the right thing through our partnership with LitterLotto.

“This collaboration is all about encouraging people to help tackle the country’s looming litter emergency and it’s brilliant to see people across the country getting involved.

“I’m looking forward to seeing many more winners benefitting from helping to keep Scotland beautiful.”

A spokesperson for LitterLotto said: “It's great to see our Scottish users benefiting from this regional jackpot.

“We hope that our partnership with Keep Scotland Beautiful will encourage others to get involved.

“Our users help keep their communities clean and green and with LitterLotto you can win cash while doing good.”

This innovative venture is one of the many ways Keep Scotland Beautiful is tackling the looming litter emergency.

A national poll conducted by the environmental charity earlier this year highlighted that two-thirds of people believe that litter is an issue in their local area, and 87 per cent believe it is an issue across Scotland.
