THERE was relief all round in Cullen at the weekend when the toilets at the links opened their doors again.

The facility near the golf club was closed last June, along with the one in the village's Millennium Square, by Moray Council in a bid to balance the books.

However, last Saturday, thanks to efforts of a group of local volunteers, the toilets are back open again in time for the forthcoming Easter holidays.

Behind the resurrection of the loos are the Friends of Cullen, previously known as Cullen Amenities.

Since taking over the lease from the council the group's band of volunteers have given the toilets a quick refurbishment and will now be running them on behalf of the community.

Group chairwoman Julie-Ann Drake said: "It’s amazing how a toilet can bring a community together.

"Everyone realises how important the public toilets are for residents, local businesses and visitors alike. There has been a great spirit of generosity and team work with people donating time, energy, money, skills and resources to make the reopening of the toilets in Cullen possible.

"There is a feeling of pride and excitement that we are here today with our beach toilets open to the public, looking fresh and clean and ready for the busy summer season.

"A huge thank you goes out to everyone who has helped to make this possible."

Further refurbishment is planned if the Friends are successful in gaining external funding. Donations are always welcomed by the group, who can be contacted via their Facebook page Friends of Cullen or by emailing friendsofcullengroup@gmail.com

Reopening the toilets in the village's Millennium Square, also closed as part of the cost-cutting measures, are net on the agenda for the group.
