A yellow weather warning for heavy rain has been issued by the Met Office for parts of Scotland on Sunday.

It will be in place from 4am until 11.59pm and will affect southern parts of the Grampian area.

Persistent and heavy rain is expected through Sunday, leading to some flooded roads and a small chance of property flooding.

The Met Office said: "Rain arriving later Saturday and persisting overnight into Sunday will continue to build up through the course of Sunday, heaviest and most persistent over a number of higher ground areas of Scotland.

"By the time the rain begins to ease late Sunday, and overnight into Monday, turning more showery from the west, many places are expected to have received 30-50mm of rain, whilst some places, most likely south-west facing hills, could see 80-120mm over the course of 24-36 hours.

"It will also become increasingly windy through Sunday, with gusts of 50-60mph on coasts and over high ground.

"This could exacerbate flooding with leaves being blown from trees to potentially block drains and gullies."

The Met Office stated the public should expect:

  • Floodwater, particularly in fast flowing areas, will pose a very small danger to life.
  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings.
  • There is a small chance that some communities will become cut off by flooded roads.
  • Delays or cancellations to rail services are possible, and possibly some disruption to travel on roads with difficult driving conditions and a small chance of road closures.
