Stantec has been commissioned by Nestrans, the Regional Transport Partnership (RTP) for the North East of Scotland, to update the previous studies which examined the case for making improvements to the A90(N) and A952 ‘corridors’ from Ellon to Peterhead and Fraserburgh.

A spokesperson for Nestrans explained: "There is a long standing and wide spread interest in seeing improvements to the A90(N) and A952 corridors amongst the communities and businesses in the area.

"Particular interest has previously focused on the junctions at the Toll of Birness and Cortes and the case for dualling the road north of Ellon, especially following the AWPR and Balmedie- Tipperty dualling.

" Some years ago studies were undertaken to look at the arguments for improving the road corridors and the potential options which could be taken forward.

"However, since these studies were completed, there have been wider changes which have impacted travel in the area.

"These include but are not limited to:

▪ The delivery of the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route (AWPR) and the Balmedie -Tipperty

dualling.

▪ The COVID-19 pandemic.

▪ New housing and businesses in the communities linked by the routes.

▪ Changes in national policy with respect to transport investment.

In light of the above, and in order to support the case for future investment, there is a requirement to review the evidence which was previously used.

Commenting on the stusy Scottish Conservative north-east MSP Liam Kerr said: “I welcome this Nestrans study which is long overdue for making improvements to the A90 and A952 from Ellon to Fraserburgh and Peterhead.

“While this is a positive step forward, it’s fundamental the results of this work make a difference in getting the upgrade our communities deserve.

“But Nestrans can only do so much without the backing and funding from the SNP Government who continue to ignore the plight of motorists who use these routes daily.

“For too long commuters have had to contend with daily accidents and near misses and it’s time for that to change.

“I urge anyone who uses the A90 and A952 to take part in the survey to highlight the impact these treacherous roads are having on their day-to-day life.”

Banff and Buchan MP David Duguid said: "Any move to make improvements to the A90 and A952 is very much welcome.

"For more than 15 years these roads have been an afterthought to the SNP Government who have repeatedly kicked the upgrade into the long grass.

“I hope this study can move us a step closer to the improvements we all want to see and I’m glad we are seeing the benefits of the City Region Deal which has allowed Nestrans to commission this.

"We have had a terrifying number of collisions at the Toll of Birness and Cortes junctions, many of which have tragically resulted in lives being lost.

"Peterhead and Fraserburgh harbours provide a huge amount to our economy yet the main route to and from these towns is not fit for purpose and in its current form is a death trap.

"I encourage the public to take part in this survey and to highlight the dangers of these roads and how they can be improved."
