The Aberdeenshire Greens have announced their candidate for the Ellon and District by-election as Green activist Peter Kennedy.

The by-election was triggered with the resignation of former councillor Richard Thomson, who was elected as the MP for Gordon in December 2019.

The by-election is set to take place on October15.

The Aberdeenshire Greens have one councillor, Martin Ford, who represents East Garioch and are looking to double their representation.

Peter Kennedy, who works for Aberdeenshire Health and Social Care Partnership as an employability officer, said "I've worked in the Ellon area for seven years and know it well.

"My priorities if elected are to push for good quality social care, excellent education facilities and for affordable housing.

"We also need an economic development plan that looks at micro-finance to benefit sustainable, small and medium sized businesses.

"Aberdeenshire is going to struggle to recover from approximately 5000 jobs being lost as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and the second oil and gas price crash.

"We could see even more jobs lost as the furlough scheme comes to an end and winter sets in."

Mr Kennedy has a Diploma in Housing and is member of the Chartered Institute of Housing.

He is also active in various charities and is dedicated to helping and understanding the needs of disadvantaged groups.

Convenor of Aberdeenshire Greens, Guy Ingerson, stated: "Peter is a deeply caring man who would make a fine councillor.

"He is a grafter who puts 110 per cent into his work and volunteering activities.

"On housing his knowledge is second to none and his expertise would be a huge asset on Aberdeenshire Council.

"I know he would reach out across the political spectrum to do what needs to be done in Ellon to ensure the community has a bright future."
