A charity which supports people in Scottish agriculture has extended heartfelt thanks to a woman who raised donated almost £17,000 after completing a month long running challenge in her father's memory.

RSABI chairperson David Leggat MBE thanked Rachel Biggar for her generosity during a visit to the family farm near Castle Douglas.

She presented a cheque for the incredible sum of £16,750 to Mr Leggat after successfully completing a month-long challenge to run 100km in a month, in memory of her late father Donald Biggar OBE.

As well as being a very well-respected Dumfries And Galloway farmer, Mr Biggar was renowned for his Chapelton Beef Shorthorn and Aberdeen-Angus herds and was a stalwart of native British beef breeds.

He was involved in many organisations including Quality Meat Scotland, SRUC and the Royal Smithfield Club and had served as chairman of WCF, which kindly donated £5000 of the total amount raised.

From June 7 to July 7, Rachel ran a total of 100km in Greece, where she is currently living, challenged by soaring temperatures and humidity.

Rachel Biggar presents a cheque to David Leggat, RSABI chair, and Mary Anne McWilliam, RSABI case officer.

She said: “Dad was a giver.

"He was generous with his time, advice, support and kindness and I know he would have loved the challenge I set myself – running is not something in my comfort zone!

"I am enormously grateful to WCF and all those who donated – sincere thanks to you all for your amazing kindness."

As chairperson, Mr Leggat said the organisation was immensely grateful to Rachel and all those who donated to her fundraiser.

He said: “Donald Biggar was a highly respected member of the farming community and we are very grateful indeed to Rachel for choosing to support RSABI and supporting the work we do to help people in the Scottish agricultural community who need some extra financial, emotional or practical support."

RSABI’s helpline, supported by RHASS, is open 365 days a year from 7am to 11pm, and can be reached by calling: 0300 111 4166.
