Gordon MP Richard Thomson has shown his support for key workers in the education, health, and social care sectors at an industry event hosted in Parliament for discount scheme provider, Network.

The SNP MP joined colleagues in Westminster to hear about the financial support available to frontline staff in the education, health, and social care sectors, and heard from Network’s managing director, Storm Postlethwaite, about the urgent need to provide key workers with a helping hand during the cost-of-living crisis.

Currently people in frontline roles are facing financial hardship, particularly in light of the cost of living crisis.

New research by Network, launched at the event, found that 41 per cent of carers, 37 per cent of teachers and 33 per cent of healthcare workers are struggling financially, with many saying they’re either heavily in debt or relying on credit.

The financial strain, alongside low morale and lack of recognition for the work that they do, has led to a recruitment and retention emergency across these vital sectors, with the NHS alone reporting 110,000 vacancies in December 2021.

During the event, MPs heard how Network’s Discount for Teachers, Discount for Carers and Health Service Discount schemes, that can save key workers £2262 a year – equivalent of giving the average nurse a 7 per cent annual pay rise - can improve quality of life as well as recruitment and retention.

According to research by Network, 50 per cent of members using the schemes say they are more likely to take or consider accepting a nursing role when promised a scheme worth £2300.

Storm Postlethwaite, Managing Director at Network said: “It was great to see so many MPs and members of the education, health and social care sectors come together to support our key workers.

"Our frontline workers make an extraordinary and invaluable contribution every day, yet many are faced with financial hardship and increasing pressures due to workforce shortages and the cost-of-living crisis.

"While times are tough, it is vital that we offer a helping hand where we can, and discount schemes are one way we can show our appreciation.”

Speaking after the event, Richard Thomson MP said: “Our key workers are the heart of our community, and it is no secret that they and our frontline services are facing significant challenges.

"This cost-of-living crisis is likely to exacerbate the issues around recruitment and retention for these sectors, and as we enter the winter months where our services will be under pressure and finances will be stretched, it is essential we provide support and show our appreciation.

“I’m pleased that there are already over 5000 key workers in my constituency currently signed up to Network’s schemes, but there is potential for this to go further.

"I’d therefore like to encourage as many key workers to join the schemes as possible to avoid missing out on saving thousands of pounds each year.”
