SNP MP for Gordon Constituency and candidate for the new Gordon & Buchan Constituency, Richard Thomson, has welcomed the announcement of a General Election, saying that only the SNP can provide the strongest possible voice in Westminster for communities in Gordon & Buchan Constituency and across Scotland.

His comments come as the Inverness Courier reports speculation that the Prime Minister will visit the Highlands today as he kicks off his own election campaign and which will see him visit as yet unknown location.

Commenting, Richard Thomson MP said: “It has been a privilege to represent the people of Gordon in Westminster during the current Parliament and I am delighted to have received the support of my local SNP members to seek re-election in the newly created constituency of Gordon & Buchan. Over that time in Westminster, it has been the SNP which has been the only party holding both an incompetent Conservative Government and an ineffectual Labour opposition to account. All of the London-based parties are committed to the same spending policies that are hammering public services and holding back the energy transition we need. Tragically, all are also now committed to a failing Brexit that has had significantly adverse outcomes for businesses and public services all across North-East Scotland.”

He continued: “SNP MPs in sharp contrast have led the way in tackling the cost of living crisis - on energy prices, making the case for investment in public services and vital infrastructure; challenging the Prime Minister over the impacts of Brexit; and leading the way on key issues such as supporting our energy sector and building the conditions needed to protect jobs through a successful energy transition. In this election, I’ll be making the case why the key decisions about all of these issues should instead be made here in Scotland. Voters have a choice – endorsement of the chaos and damage wreaked by the Conservatives over the past four years, or SNP voices who will speak up loudly for the people of North-east on the issues that matter to them, and the rights of voters in Scotland to determine their own democratic future.”
